Until fairly recently any person who indicated concern about the destruction of the environment raised skeptical eyebrows. That's a thing of the past now, with everyone being aware of the problems besetting the planet and the shared responsibility we have for turning things around. The experts are agreed that we cannot adjust things for the better without everyone's active contribution. This should happen soon and living in ways more friendly to the environment should become an objective for every individual family. The cooking area is a good place to start saving energy by going much more green.

Probably the food is not quite as good when cooked in the microwave, but it will save you money to use it over your oven. Possibly the realization that an oven utilizes 75% more energy will stimulate you to use the microwave more. Countertop appliances will certainly boil water or even steam vegetables more quickly than your stove, and use a lot less electricity. You could well be forgiven for thinking that an automatic dishwasher uses a lot more energy than washing dishes the old-fashioned method, but you would be wrong. A dishwasher is specifically effective when it's full before a cycle is commenced. Don't dry the dishes using heat, make use of the cool dry or air dry functions to increase the money you save.

As you can see, there are many little things that you can do to save energy, and save money, in the kitchen alone. Environmentally friendly living is not that hard. Typically, all it will take is a bit of common sense.

Steps to make Bacon Spinach Swirls:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F..
  2. Beat egg and water and set aside..
  3. Mix shredded cheese, parmesan cheese, garlic powder, black pepper and salt. Set aside..
  4. Unfold pastry sheet onto lightly floured surface (That is important and it will stick, if it's not lightly floured!). I use a sheet of wax paper on the counter for easy clean up and to roll up it up (you will see what I mean further down in the directions)..
  5. Brush pastry with egg mixture..
  6. Sprinkle cheese mix on pastry..
  7. Sprinkle Bacon on top of cheese mix..
  8. Sprinkle spinach on top of bacon. (I tear up tiny pieces with my fingers).
  9. Roll up pastry, jelly roll style. I use the wax paper to roll it up, and twist up the ends so it looks like a package..
  10. Put pastry roll in freezer for at least 15 minutes to firm up just a bit..
  11. Remove from freezer and slice. I like mine thinner so I go just under 1/2 inch. If anything falls out of the slice, when you place it on your baking sheet just stuff it back in the swirl..
  12. Place swirls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. (This helps with clean up, and makes the bottoms crisp up nicely)..
  13. Brush top of swirls with egg mixture..
  14. Bake for 14-16 minutes or until golden brown..
  15. Best when served warm but still tasty when served after they have cooled..
  16. TIPS: can use turkey bacon, or omit bacon for a meat free option. Also can add diced pimentos for contrasting color. I usually get 20-24 swirls out of one sheet of puff pastry, depending on how thick I cut them. If they are hard to cut, wrap them back up and throw them back in the freezer. They are easier to cut when partially frozen..

Meanwhile, in a deep frying pan, heat the olive oil and fry the garlic with the chopped unsmoked back bacon, until lightly golden. Roll out the puff pastry and place a single layer of bacon. Throw the spinach into the skillet and cook it until it considerably reduces its weight. Use a large bowl and add the cream cheese, cooked spinach, onion, and mozzarella. Beat the egg and water in a small bowl with a fork.
